Additional funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research made it possible once more to offer an academic summer institute for young students from German “universities of applied science” (Fachhochschulen/FH). The program was hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and invited 25 students to join the university’s campus in August 2016.
The summer institute at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro offered a course on “American Society and Culture”, with a special focus on “Entrepreneurship”. Through interactive workshops and experiential activities in a variety of settings, the summer institute offered gave the German program participants the opportunity to acquire the principles of entrepreneurship, enhanced their knowledge of the United States and the American system of higher education, refined their English language skills in academic writing and through presentations, visited local businesses, and allowed much interaction with interact with Americans. Numerous educational excursions and trips to the North Carolina Mountains and Washington, D.C. added to the program experience. As in the previous summers, the students´ responses were extremely positive:
“The program was a really important experience for me and my future life. It was a pleasure to get to know so many different people and cultures during our stay. I was impressed about the commitment and the cohesion between the group of scholarship students and the coordinators. Besides this personal experiences, the entrepreneurship class and the excursions had changed my way of thinking.”
