During the three-week Fulbright Summer Institutes in July/August 2017, students of German Universities of Applied Sciences had the opportunity to experience U.S. university life on campus, to enhance their knowledge of the U.S. system of higher education, expand their intercultural competences, and perfect their English language proficiency.
During the Summer Institute „Communicating Science: Communication, Collaboration, and Connection Across Differences” at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia students acquired communication and presentation skills that allow them to communicate more effectively about their work in a variety of intercultural and interdisciplinary contexts. The Fulbright Summer Institute at the Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania dealt with the topic: „American Society and Culture: Reimagining the Rust Belt, Sustainability as a New Tradition“. Through lectures, site visits and excursions students acquired first-hand knowledge about American Society and Culture with the focus on “Sustainability” in the Pittsburgh Area and addressed issues such as Re-inventing the American “Green City”, Fracking, Water Management & City Planning, Transportation, Building a New Infrastructure, Rails-to-Trails, Living in the Rustbelt: Steel Industry and The Future of Coal.
