15 American scholars in the field of German Studies and Language participated in the "Summer Academy in Leipzig for U.S.-American Faculty" providing current information on Germany in general and in Deutsch als Fremdsprache and Landeskunde in particular. This seminar took place from May 28 until June 10, 2017 and is the fourth joined venture of the Fulbright Commission and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to support and strengthen faculty in German Studies in less prominent institutions and in departments with one or very few teachers.
The seminar highlights interdisciplinary approaches and presents the region of Leipzig as an attractive example of German higher education. The InterDaF e.V of the Herder Institute at Leipzig University organized the seminar and the extra-curricular activities, which include side-trips to Berlin with the Luther-exhibition at the Martin Gropius Bau, to Dessau and the Wörlitzer-Park. The seminar participants had ample opportunities to discuss current topics such as the refugee situation in Germany with representatives of higher education institutions (e.g. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) and the City of Leipzig.
Karen Gallagher, Assistant Professor at Chapman University, participated in the 2014 Summer Academy in Leipzig and wrote about her exchange experience here.
