In Atlanta, GA, the annual Educational Experts Seminar provided 12 German university leaders and higher education strategists with close insights into the 2016 topic: “The Role of U.S. Universities: Balancing Education, Research, and Industry”. Site visits led to five very different public and private universities in Georgia. Accordingly, a variety of leadership structures and decision making processes at U.S. universities became evident: social, cultural, political, and economic factors in the region determine the universities’ individual self-positioning. Meetings with U.S. colleagues allowed for specific discussions of the strategic balancing of industry linkages and academic missions in research and education. The Consulate General with Detlev Ruenger cohosted a reception for the group and invited a number of key experts and industry representatives. This highlight event facilitated additional networking opportunities with representatives of government, business and the higher education sector, including several active fellows and alumni. Feedback from the group promises relevant impact on innovation strategies at the participants‘ German home institutions.
