We congratulate our Fulbright-Cottrell Scholar, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Olalla Vázquez, a bio-chemist at Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, for the recent cover-story publication of her research in Angewandte Chemie. In addition to this significant achievement at the conclusion of Jun.-Prof. Dr. Vázquez’s Fulbright-Cottrell Award, the publication of this research marks the first scientific collaboration between a Fulbright-Cottrell Scholar and a Cottrell Scholar, Dr. Dmitri Kosenkov, accentuating the successful Germany-U.S. exchange that led to a significant discovery. The article reports on the use of bioorthogonal reactions as an original strategy in photodynamic therapy to achieve conditional phototoxicity and specific subcellular localization simultaneously.
The Fulbright-Cottrell Award, inspired by the Cottrell Scholar Award in the U.S., is a three-year grant awarded to junior professors in chemistry, physics and astronomy for a project that integrates outstanding research and innovative teaching at institutions in Germany. The award, administered by Fulbright Germany and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), includes an additional stipend that allows the scholars to travel to the annual Cottrell Scholar Conference in Tucson, AZ and build networks with their U.S.-based Cottrell Scholar colleagues.
