Staff news

Ines Horbert, program assistant in the American Program Unit, is taking maternity leave. She is being replaced by Bettina Ross who transfers from the Front Office to the American Program Unit and who will take on the responsibility for a number of additional seminar programs, in cooperation with her colleague Catharina Hänsch.

The Commission welcomes Wenke Müller who is replacing Bettina Ross and will be in charge of the Commission’s secretariate as of July 2006.

The Commission also welcomes Dilek Gönül who joined the Commission in April 2006 to manage the programs of the newly established “Diversity Initiative” of the Commission.

Program news

The New Fulbright „Diversity Initiative“ promotes short-term scholarships for high-school and young university students with migrant background. The grantees participate in 4-6 week long “Summer Schools” at American Universities. Read more...

The 2006-2007 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Modern German Studies, which for the first time is being hosted by Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, will be filled by German Professor Dr. Henrik Enderlein. Professor Enderlein teaches at the private Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. During his 9-month guest professorship at Duke University, he will offer seminars on political economy, economic policy and European studies. Professor Enderlein will be accompanied by his wife Isabelle and his son Elias.

About 260 American professors, university students, teaching assistants, journalists, and teachers will be arriving in the next few months to start their Fulbright year in Germany. In order to meet with the incoming grantees the Fulbright Commission is organizing a series of orientation meetings.

The Teacher Linkage Program 2006 was formally concluded with a debriefing session for the 15 German participants in June 2006. This program allowed 15 German and 15 American teachers to stay in touch and meet twice over a period of one year in order to encourage additional school partnerships, professional training sessions and classroom projects.

The Seminar for German Administrators in International Education for 23 German Administrators in International Education and in Career Service took place in May 2006 in the U.S. Read more...

The German Studies Seminar 2006 on "Muslim Minorities: Opportunities and Challenges in West European Societies. German and French Experiences" offered 20 U.S. scholars the opportunity to observe first-hand the current debate about how to successfully integrate Muslim immigrant minorities into the French and German societies. FULBRIGHT PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS


The German Studies Seminar 2007 seminar will take place from June 10 - 23, 2007 and focus on: "Germany in a Changing Europe - Transatlantic Ties, Transatlantic Challenges". The seminar will be conducted in English. Application deadline is November 1, 2006. Read more...

 

FULBRIGHT EVENTS


A concert program was organized in May 2006 at the Alte Handelsbörse Leipzig by a group of U.S. Fulbright musicians and fellow German musicians for friends and partners of the German-American Fulbright Commission. Thanks to the wonderful support of the city of Leipzig, the U.S. Consulate in Leipzig and the Fulbright Program, this first-time concert initiative became a great success.

The annual conference meeting of Nobel Price Laureates with young high-potential scholars on the island of Mainau on Lake Constance from July 25 - 30 also included 3 Fulbright scholars. This year’s meeting focused on the science of chemistry.

In June, the European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh invited a group of European and U.S. experts to an EU-U.S. policy conference to discuss the Bologna Process and its implications for transatlantic cooperation. Contributions ranged from individual country case studies to strategy discussions on the future collaboration of the Higher Education institutions. The Fulbright Executive Directors of Denmark, Spain and Germany participated. Read more...

Fulbright-REAC EU-U.S. Atlantis Application

A proposal was submitted by the German-American Fulbright Commission, REAC and the University of Kentucky to the EU-U.S. Atlantis program to support six transatlantic seminars together with other European partners in several countries in Europe and in the U.S.

Report online: ACA study on Perceptions of European Higher Education
The European Commission has just released the online version of the ACA study “Perceptions of European higher education in third countries”. The study, completed in December 2005, aims to establish if and how it would be possible to market European higher education, and to identify the key messages and possible delivery mechanisms for a “European higher education brand”. ACA conference “Destination Europe?” in Bergen
The beautiful city of Bergen was the setting of the ACA 2006 conference “Destination Europe? Players, goals and strategies in enhancing the attractiveness of European universities”, which ended on 20th June with a lot of positive feedback from over 200 participants. EU-U.S. Summit: signature of new agreement to boost cooperation in higher education and vocational training
At the EU-U.S. summit in Vienna on June 21, 2006, a new eight-year education agreement was signed between the two parties, renewing their long-standing cooperation programme in higher education and vocational training. The new agreement will usher in innovative Transatlantic Degree programmes, promote exchanges of students, teachers and other professionals, strengthen the Schuman-Fulbright Programme and encourage greater institutional collaboration in tertiary education. U.S.: International graduate applications increase after two years of decline
A report released by the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) has revealed that applications from international students have increased by 11 per cent from 2005 to 2006. This is a positive trend reversal considering that international students applications had been decreasing since 2004. Read more...

UNESCO Institute for Statistics publishes new mobility data
The UNESCO Institute for Statistics has just published the 2006 edition of the Global Education Digest. This publication provides a treasure of data on tertiary education world-wide. Amongst them are statistics on foreign and mobile students in the year 2004. The Digest uses a new definition of internationally mobile students, i.e. students studying in foreign countries where they are not permanent residents, and uses specific indicators from the perspectives of both the sending and receiving countries.
