High School Principal Program 2006
October 2006
For the first time the Commission welcomed fifteen leading American school administrators, representing the great diversity of American secondary schools to a special intensive program from October 28 to November 4. This group complemented four previous programs for American Superintendents and acquainted the high school principals with the German school system, the role and responsibility of the private sector in German education, and the cultural diversity and richness of Germany's varying regions. The program's schedule was innovative in that it offered insights into the school systems of Berlin and Hesse, interrupted by the short work-shadowing phase where each of the participants spent several days together with German colleagues in the states of Brandenburg and Northrhine-Westfalia. The U.S. principals left Germany with a good understanding of the reform situation in the German school system and many personal impressions of how German schools educate children towards a German and European if not global market.
The program was made possible through a special contribution from the U.S. State Department.
