German Studies Seminar

ELIGIBILITY

The seminar is open to U.S. university, college, and community college scholars in disciplines related to the seminar topic. Non-experts with an interest in the topic are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Ph.D./ Ph.D. candidacy/other equivalent degree or qualification
  • A high level of academic achievement
  • A solid project proposal

Preference will be given to applicants with full-time teaching appointments.

DESCRIPTION

The two-week seminar covers wide areas of contemporary Germany with program portions in Berlin and other cities in eastern and western Germany. Each year the seminar is dedicated to a special topic. Past topics included: Urban Planning in Germany; International Migration and National Identities; Challenges of Demographics; Muslim Minorities; Germany in a Changing Europe; Germany's Political System.

The German Studies Seminar 2010 dealt with: "The German Sozialstaat Re-Visited: A System in Turmoil".

NUMBER OF GRANTS

Up to 25 grants are available.

GRANT BENEFITS

Award benefits include program costs, round-trip transportation and a per diem allowance for meals, lodging, and local travel.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE & DEADLINES

The sholarship announcement for the German Studies Seminar 2011 will be publicized in the summer of 2010. Further information will be then available here and on the CIES website.
