THE POTATO CART
Someone is rich
someone has buckets
and baskets of potatoes
stacked on a cart
someone is ready to go
and will surely go far
for if you have
a supply of potatoes
you can go anywhere
and children and lovers
will follow you
wherever you go
potatoes are gas
in the tank
money in the account
ink in your pen
indulgences for the soul
light in the dark
if you know what you
are doing potatoes can
even give you vodka
to sip as you go
not just meat
and gravy heaped over
mounds and boulders
of white pleasure
at the side of the road
not just dollops
of mashed whiteness
holding a pond of dark
gravy in the middle
of the country
who has potatoes
has the means
to go anywhere
at any time
can barter and trade
with people all
over the world
it all comes down
to one principle:
who has potatoes
shall inherit the earth!
