"Societies in Transition:
Energy, Climate and Oceans – Impacts on the Global Economy"
Journalists and Experts Alumni Program
From January 27 - February 3, 2010 a group of seven Fulbright alumni went on a study tour to Berlin, Hamburg and Copenhagen as part of the Round Table USA’s alumni program "Societies in Transition: Energy, Climate and Oceans – Impacts on the Global Economy". Designed specifically for journalists and climate experts, this year’s program provided a total of 47 American and German participants a platform to discuss issues of climate change and its impact on energy systems, technological developments, and policy making on the European, national and local level. Meetings with high-ranking government representatives were followed by discussions with renowned climate experts such as Professor Jacqueline McGlade, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency. The failed Copenhagen Climate Conference provided ample opportunity to discuss the future of international, national and local efforts to reduce emissions and to not only develop strategies and technologies to combat climate change and its consequences but to also be able to communicate them to a broader audience. The alumni program was completed by on-site visits to local projects such as “Gymnasium Allee”, a high school in Hamburg which is successfully incorporating renewable energy solutions in its building and curriculum.
