Summer Institute for Outstanding European Students in Education

About the Program
The Summer Institute for Outstanding European Students in Education is a five-week program in the United States for university students who are focusing their studies in the field of Education. The 2010 Institute program will offer up to six students from Germany the opportunity to learn about the United States and the American systems of primary, secondary, and higher education, join in community service activities, refine their English language skills, and interact with American students and fellow participants from France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Individuals from a broad range of ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Awards will cover all program costs. All activities will be conducted in English.

Participants will travel to the United States on July 24, 2010 and return to Germany on August 28, 2010. The Institute will take place on the campus of Eastern Washington University near Tacoma, Washington. There will be a total of 12 participants in the Institute. Participants and Institute staff will attend a meeting in Washington, DC, at the conclusion of the program.

Eligibility Requirements
Individuals interested in participating in the Summer Institute for Outstanding European Students in Education must meet the following eligibility requirements. The program is open to students whose program of study is related to Education. Applicants must:
- be able to participate in the program in its entirety;
- have completed at least two years of coursework in Education;
- have a sustained high level of academic achievement, as indicated by academic grades, awards, and teacher recommendations;
- have an adequate working knowledge of English;
- be committed to returning to their home university in the fall of 2010;
- have had little or no study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of Germany;
- be mature, responsible, independent, and open-minded;
- and be willing and able to fully participate in an academically intensive program that includes community service.
All participants will be required to obtain a J-1 visa prior to traveling to the United States. The U.S. Department of State will issue the relevant paperwork, and the Fulbright Commission will arrange the visa interview.
Financial Provisions
Those selected as participants in the 2010 Summer Institute will be provided with the following:
- round-trip airfare from home city to the host university in the United States, including a stop in Washington, DC, at the conclusion of the program;
- visa sponsorship
- tuition and fees at the host university;
- lodging and meals on the host university campus;
- a small daily allowance for incidental expenses;
- health and accident coverage in accord with United States Government guidelines;
- a book and educational materials allowance.
Application Procedure & Deadlines
The application period for 2010 is closed. The scholarship announcement for the Summer Institute 2011 will be publicized in the beginning of 2011. Further information and application materials will then be available here.
